University Place Mayor Denise McCluskey played Mrs. Claus on Dec. 13, when she participated in a holiday giving event for residents of Tyler Street Transitional Housing. Organized by Peace Out, a U.P. based after school program established to teach youth the importance of civic engagement and social responsibility, the fun time was highlighted by the sharing of gifts for about 25 families in the Tyler housing community so that they could have a merry Christmas. Tyler Square Transitional Housing provides a one-year transitional housing program for families who are homeless.
“Everyone had big smiles and they had a great time,” McCluskey said. “Every family got everything on their lists. We really made their Christmas.” A few cute little elves even showed up to help out. Moms could wrap gifts there or take them home to wrap, and everyone enjoyed a potluck of delicious food and pictures with Mrs. Claus as the Curtis High School Jazz Band played festive holiday music.
